Traditional Treatments

Common treatments include:

  • over the counter acid treatment, over the counter freezing

  • blistering agents

  • prescription topical medications that you apply at home

  • freezing with liquid nitrogen at your doctors

  • surgical removal including cutting, laser

  • all of which usually cause some level of pain, possible time off your feet, some level of wound care

These approaches focus on removing wart tissue, but may not fully address the underlying viral infection—leading to no change, recurrence, worsening of wart in some cases.

What are warts?

  • A wart is a skin infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).

  • There are over 150 types of HPV, and several affect the feet, causing plantar warts.

  • The virus enters through tiny breaks in the skin and infects normal skin cells

  • Because it is an infection it can spread throughout the foot and body as well as to others around you.

Problem!

  • Plantar warts can be surprisingly painful, and/or difficult to get rid of, especially on weight-bearing areas of the foot.

  • Many patients try over-the-counter treatments or freezing for months—only to see the wart persist, spread, or become more uncomfortable over time.

Common Findings and Symptoms

Warts can vary in appearance and feel, but commonly include:

  • Thickened, raised, rough skin that may resemble a callus, usually clear margins, maybe pale pink colored

  • Pain when walking or standing though sometimes painfree

  • Small black dots within the lesion (these are tiny clotted blood vessels) though not always present

 WHY WARTS PERSIST

  • Warts can be difficult to treat because your immune system may not recognize the infection right away.

  • The virus lives within your skin cells allowing it to hide

  • Warts can persist for months—or even years

Many patients we see have already tried multiple treatments without success.
